Most touristy experiences that claim to show the ‘Real Rajasthan‘ package a Bollywood-ised idea of sand, camels and turbans within an urban bubble. But that’s not our style.

Tradition is a sacred practice that has been passed down for centuries. It is not an Instagram aesthetic. It is in every sound we hear, the food we eat, and the air we breathe.

And so, at Singing Sands Heritage Festival, we don’t just make you engage with tradition. We make you live it.

Why Shekhawati?

Shekhawati isn’t just another region of Rajasthan. It’s a living museum where heritage peeks through every fresco-decked haveli.

A haven for wealthy merchants, Shekhawati’s folk traditions were influenced by trade routes and royal patronage. With business booming, its people extended their enterprising nature towards literature, music and crafts.

It is the origins of this ancient culture that we capture. Singing Sands Heritage Festival unfolds across an entire village ecosystem. While the main venue is an 18th-century fortress, experiences spill into every street of Dundlod. A walk through its lanes unveils painted havelis that rival any art gallery. But unlike curated galleries, these aren’t preserved artifacts. They’re homes where families still live. The frescoes tell stories of Shekhawati prosperity and pride. The murals exhibit artistic finesse that remains unmatched six centuries later.

There is culture in every corner of Singing Sands. You encounter it while sipping chai in courtyards. You discover it during heritage walks through painted alleyways. Children chase each other through the same lanes where their ancestors played centuries ago. Elderly women echo the stories that their grandmothers told them.

A Familiar Sound

In the words of our festival director, Vinod Joshi, “The music you hear at Singing Sands Heritage Festival is untouched by the modern world, and older than anything around us.”

We have spent every waking second of the past two years curating the most authentic sounds of Rajasthan under one roof. This involves handpicking artists who keep the purest form of Shekhawati folk music alive. People who are passionate not just about taking Shekhawati music to new places, but staying true to where it comes from.

The festival showcases National award-winning artists whose families have served this craft for generations. They’re masters of a technique that pre-dates written history. Each song carries stories passed down through generations.

This is unlike any concert you’ve ever been to.

A Taste of Shekhawati

No Shekhawati experience is complete without visiting Dundlod’s world-renowned stud farm. The legendary indigenous Marwari horses carried maharajas into battle and nobility through ceremony, representing centuries of Rajput glory. Guests learn what makes them among the finest horses on the planet through fascinating stories shared by Thakur Raghuvendra Singh, making this encounter the festival’s ultimate highlight.

Another aspect defining Rajasthan is its food. At Singing Sands, each meal is a unique blend of desert survival, royal extravagance, and community celebration, designed with love by our team of experts. Age-old techniques and local ingredients come together on your plate to present the best Rajasthani flavors.

But we don’t just serve you the food. We also give an insider’s peek into what went behind the plate. Our authentic delicacies are rich in both flavour and tradition. Every meal at Singing Sands helps you understand how scarcity shaped flavor profiles, why certain spices dominate desert cooking, and the cultural significance behind traditional preparation methods. It tells a story of how desert dwellers transformed limitations into culinary artistry.

Digging Deeper

Despite being spread over nine venues, featuring 125 artists and artisans, we deliberately kept the festival intimate last year. Our goal was to foster engagement that goes beyond the surface.

This is most visible in one of our flagship elements, the bustling ‘craft bazaar’. It features a collective of award-winning artisans, showcasing their masterpieces. They not only create the most exotic and beautiful trinkets, but also help guests understand the intricacies of their crafts with fascinating stories.

With every moment being interactive, and every space being shared, we want our guests to be more than spectators. You don’t just watch from a distance. You participate.

Try playing the Nagada during music workshops. Experience the ancient art of Mandana painting, with a hands-on tutorial from expert artistes and artisans. Watch a glass mosaic artist create intricate patterns using Mughal-era methods. Feel the cool earth in your hands, as you gently shape it into an elegant vase, as veteran potters guide you.

Taking it Slow

In an age of instant gratification, Singing Sands Heritage Festival offers the ultimate luxury: slowness. The festival forces you to pause, listen, and reflect. Our tours aren’t about checking things off an itinerary. There’s no rushing between Instagram-worthy moments. Because every moment deserves your attention.

The goal isn’t just to entertain, but also to preserve this culture. When you participate in traditional craft workshops, you’re not just learning a skill—you’re ensuring that a tradition survives. We hope you’ll take it back with you to every corner of the world.

Our small scale ensures quality over quantity. Every interaction is meaningful. Every experience is personal. This is why Singing Sands stands as Rajasthan’s purest folk experience. Not because it’s the biggest or flashiest, but because it’s the most real.

As you prepare for Singing Sands Heritage Festival 2025, remember this: you’re not just buying tickets to an event. You’re accepting an invitation to live a culture.
